Sir Thomas Wharton Alternative Learning Provision
The Sir Thomas Wharton Alternative Learning Provision provides an alternative, bespoke provision for children with social, emotional, mental health needs. At the offsite Hilltop centre, all students are welcomed with no prejudice from their previous experiences at the school’s main site. This allows all students to start afresh in Y10 and given a fantastic opportunity to succeed throughout their KS4 education preparing them for a successful post 16 progression.
We deliver a bespoke curriculum that is ambitious, yet is focussed on raising students' aspirations by challenging them academically and providing opportunities and broader experiences to allow them to become well-rounded young people.
The curriculum includes the core subjects of English, Maths and Science as well as Art, PE and our tailored ASDAN CoPE Level 2 qualification. Students attending the provision will also access support in social, emotional aspects of learning and daily will have therapeutic input to help them to; regulate feelings, identify triggers to feelings and to develop coping strategies to be able to access learning and to succeed.
Our staff are specialists in their respective subject areas including the alternative learning provision. The staff members are able to provide wrap around pastoral and academic support which enable students the opportunity to thrive and succeed.
Our small class sizes and high staffing ratios allows us to spend time getting to know our students both inside the classroom and through breaks and lunch times. This then forges some excellent working relationships that can benefit the students in their studies.
We have high expectations for all students regardless of ability and/or need. We are proud that we have high standards for all; good classroom conduct and core values such as respect and manners are instilled and expected. This extends beyond the classroom and the centre to activities off site.
Our aim is to equip students with the right skills and values for them to continue their education post 16. We believe that by raising aspirations, providing students with broader experiences and providing bespoke academic support all students can achieve.
